Juneau, officially the City and Borough of Juneau, is a consolidated city-borough and the capital city of Alaska. It became a consolidated city-borough on July 1, 1970, when the City of Juneau merged with the City of Douglas and the surrounding Greater Juneau Borough.
The city of Juneau has been the capital of Alaska since 1906 when the seat of government was moved from Sitka. It is located on the Gastineau Channel in the larger Borough of Juneau. When Russia was in control of Alaska between 1784 to 1867, Juneau remained a native village used by the Auke and Taku tribes. After gold was discovered in California in 1849, prospectors worked their way north up the west coast. In 1880 a 160-acre town site was marked ant a mining camp was established.
