Abandoned coal mine.
The mine was developed from 1951. In 1996, the New Zealand government owned Solid Energy obtained a right to work the mine, but this closed in 2000, when the only customer, the Carter Holt paper mill nearby closed.
In May 2013, Solid Energy as a joint venture with Colorado based GTL Energy Limited opened a coal briquette plant on the site. This facility reduced the moisture content of coal, increasing its thermal capacity, and reducing emissions. Six months later the plant closed, and was partly responsible for Solid Energy going into liquidation.
The coal measures here contain wood of the species Cupressaceae (Libocedrus), and rooted Podocarpaceae logs and branches.
The coal mine is 200 metres west of State Highway 1, 3 kilometres south of Mataura. The northern section of the mine shows as a series of north-south trending lakes, being old pits, with the abandoned processing facilities at the southern end off Craig Road.
