Gold is said to have been discovered here by government surveyor, G.T. Garvie in 1857, however it was not until 1863, that alluvial miners began working the site. Nuggets the size of peas and beans were said to have been obtained from the river and banks.
It was a remote goldfield and little information was found about it. The site is not easily reached. The best access is to travel in from the Lake Roxburgh Dam on the Clutha River, on the Mount Hope Road. The site needs to be walked into along the Junction Track. A hikers hut is near the junction of the Pomahaka and Little Pomahaka rivers. The site according to maps is just downstream. Minor evidence of stacked tailings, tail races, dams, and old hotel ruins can be seen.
The site straddles the Southland and Otago border which follows the Pomahaka River here.
