Historic gold-silver mine.
The lease was taken out around 1880, and the Silverton Gold and Silver Mining Company was formed. J.A. Pond is noted as provincial analysis expert, large shareholder in the company, and one of the directors.
Rich stone was uncovered in 1886. The company had a 40 stamp battery on its property. The Littlejohn tributing party is working part of the mine in 1890. The plant was changed to the Cassel process in 1893.
The company was reconstructed in 1895, with applications for shares double that available, and again in 1898 as the Waihi-Silverton Gold Mining Company, with £60,000 capital.
Joseph Devlin was killed when he hit unexploded dynamite in 1896. The underground manager was censured by the subsequent enquiry, for not informing the shift taking over of the misfire. He had remembered on reaching home, and was returning to the mine when the accident happened. It amounted to a slap on the wrist. In 1898, William Mangin was killed in a fall of earth when timbering gave way. The jury stated the mine manager should take greater precautions with timbering in the mine, but no legal process was in place at the time to take further actions.
In 1900, the mine and company was taken over by the Waihi Gold Mining Company for £35,000. The Silverton battery was used by the company until 1911, and there may have been tributers operating in the mine late 1920's.
The mine is in the Union Hill area, just east of the Waihi town centre.
