Historic gold mine.
The mine was located just south of the Ohinemuri River, on what is now open pasture, with a couple of houses nearby. Little appears to remain.
The lease was taken out early 1876 by J. Dickson, being a continuation of the north-south trending reefs found to the north of the Ohinemuri River. The party took a number of specimens to be shown around the district, including at the National Bank at Thames. This was described as brown conglomerate with many quartz veinlets through it, thickly strewn with coarse gold.
Mid 1876, they decide to erect a 2 stamp battery, disparaging labelled as a coffee grinding machine. The main driver for this, was J. Perry's battery for the goldfield, was sited on the northern side of the Ohinemuri River, where most of the other mines were located. The Morning Light battery opened June 1876, crushing 2 tonnes of ore for 8 ounces, then the driving wheel split. The battery was repaired, however broke down again shortly after, and was dismantled and removed.
Instead they constructed a major bridge across the river, and lay a tramway from the mine to the battery. Like most of the mines for this goldfield, there was rich stone near surface, however it went to no depth.
Late 1877, Smith and party have taken over the lease, then in 1878, its noted J. Liddell and party had taken over the claim, calling it Owharoa, although the Morning Light name continues to be used by everyone else. It is re-pegged by Cassrels and party in 1881. There may have been later prospectors who gave it a trial, but little came of it.
