The foundations of the Golden Hills battery can be seen on a walk from the Broken Hills campground.
The Auckland based Tairua Golden Hills Gold Mining Company was formed in 1907 to mine gold on Davey's Reef. B. Barker was appointed mine manager. The company was reconstructed in 1910 as the Tairua Golden Hills Limited, when it had exhausted its capital to develop the mine after erecting the battery.
Gold was first discovered at the site in 1893, and 11 tonnes of ore was extracted from Daveys Claim for 47 ounces of gold, but it was abandoned shortly after. The 20 (or 10 depending on the source) stamp battery and cyanide plant was erected in 1910, linked to the mine on the opposite side of the river by an aerial tramway. For the next two years the mine produced a total of 3406 tonnes of ore for 2739 ounces of gold.
The mine closed in 1914, and remained idle until 1920 when tributer J.M. Agnew extracted 603 tonnes of ore for 826 ounces of gold. Work ceased when no more payable ore was found.
The reef is hosted by altered banded spherulitic rhyolite, the veins containing altered rhyolite fragments cemented by chalcedonic quartz. Au-Ag is found in kaolinite filled fissures, while the quartz veins are barren to low grade in Au-Ag.
