Historic gold mine.

Chelmsford is 3 kilometres east of Neavesville. The site has now reverted to scrub and forest.

In 1899, a group of miners and investors formed the Chelmsford syndicate, and developed a mine here. The lease covered 200 acres, containing five reefs. After several crushings the mine, 10 stamp battery, and cyanide plant was sold to the newly formed New Chelmsford Company in 1903. Crushings continued for the next two years.

A total of 4487 tonnes of ore was processed, yielding 3144 ounces of gold-silver. From 1906-1908 the Taihoa Gold Mining Company prospected the lower levels with no success.

The deposit is hosted by altered andesite, with most ore coming from the No. 1 Main Reef, at 2 feet wide. Gold and silver is found in sheeted and brecciated vein material, recemented by chalcedony. Cavities are common, often lined with quartz crystals, much iron oxidised and stained black by manganese oxides.
