The Huntly West coal mine is 3 kilometres west of Huntly, and supplied the Huntly power station on the Waikato River with coal via a conveyor belt.
The mine was established in the late 1970's. Government owned Solid Energy collapsed in 2015 after entering into creative investments for the use of coal, including a coal gasification project at Huntly West, the plan being to burn coal on mass scale underground to produce gas.
In late 2016, Bathurst Resources and Talleys Energy purchased the mine.
