About 20 kilometres south-east of the Mount Phillips Station homestead is the Mount Phillips Amethyst Mine, and a further 8 kilometres east is the Leake Spring Amethyst Mine. The track to the location is diabolical, and requires permission from the station owner.
The open pit produced 4163 kg of amethyst across 1971-72, and when the Mount Phillips Amethyst Mine was visited in 2011, the station owner advised the Leake Spring site was an active lease and off limits.
Amethyst is found in quartz seggregations in a zoned pegmatite, near calc-silicate and marble palaeosomes in migmatite.
The Mindat co-ordinates are very approximate.
