Ratssteinbruch, آلمان
Abandoned quarry in a pyroxene-granulite.
Note: The name of the locality translates by analogy to "Council quarry", "Council's quarry" or "Quarry of the Council". "Rat" is German for "council", of which the genitive case ("des Rates" = "of the council") becomes "Rats- ..." in assembled substantives. Since there is no inflection of the substantive in the English language, an appropriate translation with retention of the German substantive is either "Rat quarry" or "Rat's quarry", but not "Rats quarry" (this would inevitably become "Ratsessteinbruch" in a re-translation ...). On the other hand, because the English "rat" translates to "Ratte" in German, retention of the German substantive in the English name is inappropriate because it is highly confusing. Therefore, we retained (until 8/2026) the full German name here without a translation.
