Large beach with rocks affected by fumarolic activity. There are also numerous underwater springs of hot water.
Natural assemblages of iron (mono)sulfides from an active, shallow-sea, hydrothermal system off Milos Island, Hellenic Volcanic Arc (HVA), Greece. This shallow-sea system is widely known because the discharging, H2S-rich hydrothermal fluids contain the highest concentration of arsenic reported for any submarine hydrothermal system. Moreover, it is characteristic that the venting areas host diverse populations of SRM and sulfide-oxidizing bacteria (SOB), forming patches of white, yellow, and orange color. The availability of reactive iron species and H2S (both biologic and geogenic), the prevalence of SRM and SOB in the hydro- thermal precipitates, and the accessibility of this shallow-sea site render it a natural biogeochemical laboratory for the study of metastable iron (mono)sulfides and their ties to sulfur, iron, and carbon biogeochemical cycling.
