Wijngaardgroeve

The Duivelsgrot ("Devil's Cave") or Wijngaardgroeve ("Vineyard Quarry") is a small system of tunnels in the Sint-Pietersberg, part of the Caestert Plateau, which is located on the side of the Jeker valley. The quarry is located south of Maastricht in Dutch South Limburg. At the site of the quarry, the dry valley Poppelmondedal ends in the Jekerdal. The entrance to the quarry is less than 200 meters from the border with Belgium and about 400 meters northeast of Kanne.

The Nieuwe Marendal Quarry used to be located approximately 530 meters to the northeast and the Oude Marendal Quarry is located approximately 530 meters to the north. Approximately 250 meters to the east is the southwestern quarry wall of the ENCI quarry.

The quarry was mined by block crushers for the extraction of limestone blocks.

The quarry has been an animal stable and storage facility for a long time.

The origin of the name may lie in the Old Testament, where it is mentioned that the antichrist (worthless shepherd), associated with the devil, is blind in one eye: (Zechariah 11:17: "Woe to that worthless shepherd who abandons a flock, let a sword come over his arm and over his right eye! May his arm dry up and dry out and the light in his right eye go out and become dim!"

In the spring of 2021, Natuurmonumenten closed the entrance with a Corten steel screen due to the risk of collapse. As a result, the Devil's Cave is no longer accessible.

The slope in which the quarry is located is called the Poppelsberg. The common rock-rose (Helianthemum nummularium) occurs in this nearby Poppelmonde valley. Furthermore, rare lime-loving plants live there.
