The hot springs and fumaroles in Furnas, on São Miguel Island in the Azores, are characterized by boiling water, bubbling mud and steam emissions.

As in any area where magma lies closer to the Earth’s surface, the fumarolic fields of Vila das Furnas and Lagoa das Furnas are sites of significant volcanic activity, where impressive geothermal features can be observed.

Curiosity: Several photos show Cozido das Furnas, a traditional Azorean dish and one of São Miguel’s most celebrated culinary specialties. Prepared with meats, vegetables, and root crops, the ingredients are seasoned only with coarse salt and slowly cooked in underground volcanic pits using natural geothermal heat.
