Group of Mountain Ranges
Köppen climate type:
The Humboldt Mountains are a group of mountains immediately west of the Petermann Ranges, forming the westernmost portion of the Wohlthat Mountains in Queen Maud Land.
The mountains were discovered and mapped by the Third German Antarctic Expedition (1938–1939), led by Alfred Ritscher, who named them for the famed naturalist and geographer Alexander von Humboldt. A plaque was erected at India Point (71°45'08''S, 11°12'30''E) in the Humboldt Mountains in memory of three scientists of the Geological Survey of India, as well as a communications technician from the Indian Navy, all of whom were members of the ninth Indian Expedition to Antarctica, who died in an accident at the site on 8 January 1990.
Mount Skarshovden (71°47'S, 11°38'E) is a rounded mountain, 2,830 metres high, surmounting the western side of Hovdeskar Gap. It was discovered and photographed by the Third German Antarctic Expedition, 1938–39, mapped by Norway from air photos and surveys by Norwegian Antarctic Expedition, 1956–60, and named Skarshovden ("the gap mountain"). Hovdeskar Gap (71°47'S, 11°39'E), just east of Mount Skarshovden at the head of Skarsbrotet Glacier, was named Hovdeskar ("the knoll gap") by the Norwegians.
The Skarshaugane Peaks (71°49'S, 11°37'E) are a group of peaks, including Mount Skarshovden (71°47'S, 11°38'E), that extend south for 4.8 km from Hovdeskar Gap and named Skarshaugane ("the gap peaks").
The Betekhtin Range (71°54′S, 11°32′E) is a mountain range about 23 km long, forming the southern arm of the Humboldt Mountains. It was discovered and plotted from air photos by the Third German Antarctic Expedition, 1938–39, mapped from air photos and from surveys by the Sixth Norwegian Antarctic Expedition, 1956–60, and remapped by the Soviet Antarctic Expedition, 1960–61, and named after Soviet Academician A.G. Betekhtin. Skeidsnutane Peaks is a group of peaks in the Betekhtin Range, including Hånuten Peak (2,885 m), that extend south for about 11 km from Skarshaugane Peaks. Mount Khmyznikov (71°52′S, 11°39′E) is a peak, 2,800 metres high, in the northern part of the Skeidsnutane Peaks, Betekhtin Range. It was discovered and plotted from air photos by the Third German Antarctic Expedition, 1938–39. It was mapped from air photos and surveys by the Sixth Norwegian Antarctic Expedition, 1956–60, remapped by the Soviet Antarctic Expedition, 1960–61, and named after Soviet hydrographer P.K. Khmyznikov.
Yanovskiy Rocks (71°56'S; 11°40'E) are two isolated rock outcrops lying 8 kilometres south of Mount Khmyznikov near the southeast end of the Humboldt Mountains. First mapped from air photos and surveys by Soviet Antarctic Expedition, 1960–61, and named after Soviet hydrographer S.S. Yanovskiy.
