Marijuana Mine
A former small surface and underground Zn-Pb-Cu-Ag-Au mine located one patented claim in East-central (SE¼SW¼SE¼) sec. 3, T23S, R16E (protracted), about 1.0 mile S of Washington Camp, on private land. Also located adjacent on the NW to the Empire Mine and on the NE to the Belmont Mine. Discovered 1875. Produced 1955-1957. Owned at times, or in part, by the Duquesne Mining & Reduction Co.; Nash Mines; and, Mr. Alberto De la Ossa (1957).
Mineralization is small, spotty, and irregular lenses of sulfides in pyrometasomatized Permian Naco Group limestone, partly oxidized near the surface with supergene enrichment in silver. The host rock unit is the Colina Limestone. Ore concentration was partial oxidation near surface.
Local structures include nearby granodiorite intrusions. Tectonic elements include the Duquesne Fault Block.
Mineral deposits of the Washington-Duquesne area occupy a limestone-sediment belt (2.5 miles long by 1.25 miles wide) surrounded by igneous rocks which also form detached masses and dikes within the belt.
Workings include tunnel, open cut, and shaft operations. Developments included an 80 foot inclined shaft, stoped at the 80 foot level. Worked sporadically by lessees, mainly in the 1950's. Produced some 800 tons of ore averaging about 7% Zn, 6% Pb, 2% Cu, and 6 oz. Ag/T.
