Soussaki Volcano

Very interesting place known as the Sousaki Volcano (sometimes spelled 'Soussaki'). The volcano was last active 2.5 million years ago and is now a gorge that emits about 1 ton of gasses (mostly CO2) each day from the geothermal systems. The gasses are 35-42 °C hot making a walk in the gorge on a hot summer day feel extra hot.

Warm water is retrieved from the geothermal systems. Do not enter any of the caves as it could cause immediate collaps as the level of H2S is 1000 – 6000 ppm inside the caves! There is no signing in the area warning visitors, but beware of headache, coughing or any other symptoms. The level of H2S in the sorrounding atmosphere is low according to the litterature, but in theory it can build up in some low-lying, narrow places in the gorge. There is a very intense smell of rotten egg (sulphur) in and near the gorge.

Minerals: The volcano is rich in minerals, especially Selenite (with crystals ranging from 1 to 10> centimeters in size and with different crystal habits).

Protection status: Unclear, but the whole volcanic arc it is part of might become a UNESCO Geopark in the future (thus making mineral collecting prohibited).
