Under the name Excelsior the mine was at work at times between 1873 and 1884 on far older workings, producing 5 tons of tin ore. The Excelsior Tunnel was driven southwestward from Deerpark Wood towards the North Engine Shaft of Kit Hill looking for lodes of tin and copper. Driving of the tunnel started in 1877 and continued on and off over the next 60 years until 1938 when it was finally given up, still about 310mts short of its objective. It is however almost 1km in length and dead straight, it is possible to see the portal from the far end.
In 1959 it was receiving the attention of the Military / Atomic Energy Authority as a site to test the possibility of masking the seismic signal given out by underground nuclear tests. A history is given here with excellent photos http://www.subbrit.org.uk/sb-sites/sites/e/excelsior_tunnel/index3.shtml
However, to update the above page there are now several collapsed areas and the remaining timbering is looking very unstable. There are no mineral exposures within the tunnel and the minerals listed were most likely recovered from the now very overgrown dumps. (June 2005).
