In the Upper Mississippi Valley Mining District.

In this, the southernmost subdistrict in Iowa, the lead deposits are some of the first to be exploited. Widely scattered groups of old shafts and pits are along Tete des Morts River in secs. 4, 5, 8, and 9, T. 87 N., R. 4 E., east of St. Donal us, Iowa. The galena occurs in the Stewartville member of the Galena formation along vertical mineralized joints and openings that have a general easterly strike. The groups of deposits have an easterly trend and they may overlie the southwesterly extension of the Galena syncline. The subdistrict has been very little prospected for ore bodies of the pitch-and-flat type in the Decorah formation, but drilling by the U. S. Geological Survey in 1951 (Agnew, Flint and Allingham, 1953) showed several favorable structures and mineralized areas of promise.
