A Cu-Ag-As occurrence/mine located in the SW¼SW¼SW¼ sec. 27, T57N, R32W, Michigan Meridian, at Mohawk (headframe hamlet), approximately 6 miles (ca. 10 km) north of Calumet on the east side of Route 41, on private land. Owned by the Fulton Mining Company (1898). Owned by Universal Oil Products (100%), Illinois (1977). The USGS MRDS database stated accuracy for this locality is 100 meters.

The Mohawk Mining Company was incorporated in 1898 with Joseph Gay as president, who took over part of the lands of Fulton Mining Company, after lumberman Ernest Koch found copper on the property in 1896. It is best known to collectors for the occurrence of mohawkite (a mixture of algodonite, domeykite, and copper). The mine also produced a large amount of native silver, especially in the upper levels. In 1923 the Mohawk Mining Company took over the Wolverine Copper Mining Company and the Michigan Copper Mining Company.

Mineralization is a Cu-Ag-As deposit (Mineral occurrence model information: Model code: 96; USGS model code: unassigned; Deposit model name: Native Cu; Mark3 model number: 99), hosted in the Stenian (1095 MA) Portage Lake Volcanics (basalt), and in the Stenian (1095 MA) Kearsarge Amygdaloid (basalt). The orebody strikes N45E and dips 35W at a thickness of 2.9 meters, a width of 1,490 meters, and a length of 3,250 meters, over an area of 250 hectares. Orebody #1 is tabular, #2 is a replacement body and lenticular, #3 is a fissure vein. The primary mode of origin was "other" and the secondary mode was fracturing. Controls for ore emplacement included an amygdaloidal basalt flow top. Wall rock alteration is slight (propylitic & bleaching).

Copper grade in the productive part of the Kearsarge lode appears to have been as rich at, or very near, the outcrop as at greater depth, but the remainder of the lode was relatively poor at the surface. Areas of low-grade ore near the surface are coincident with areas of relatively thin or cellular, impermeable lode rocks. At the S end of Mohawk, there was very good ground in the upper levels of the mine. Apparently, rocks in the upper levels of the mine were as good as those deeper. Kearsarge was one of the richest lodes – especially near the hanging wall. The lode averaged 6 to 13 feet (ca. 4 m) thick in the area of mining activity.

Local geologic structures include the Mohawkite Fissure, a fissure crossing the Kearsarge lode.

Production statistics for the Mohawkite Fissure: Period: 1900-1901, 104.7 metric tons of mohawkite ore (accurate). Further production occurred during the period 1902-1925 and totalled 117,530 metric tons of Cu (accurate).
