Miniere di Fontanelle e Rio Albano, Rio Marina, Rio, Provincia di Livorno, Toscana, Italia

Two adjacent mines mainly consisting of open-cast workings, even though minor tunnelling was performed for both prospection and ore exploitation.

Fornacelle mine, located 1.5 km southeast of Cavo, was operated in the period 1950-1968 and was subdivided into an upper and a lower stope. Various minerals, in addition to hematite, have been reported: azurite, chalcocite, chalcopyrite, limonite, malachite, pyrolusite, quartz, and sphalerite.

Rio Albano mine, located SSE of the previous one, was exploited since the end of the 19th century in various stopes (Calendozio, Conche, Pistello, Puppaio, and Venezia). Accessory minerals accompanying the exploited ores (hematite and limonite) include pyrite, magnetite, siderite, manganese oxides, azurite, and native copper. At the Conche stope, exploited in the period 1940-1968, crystals of various sulfates may crystallise along the shores of the post-mining pond in certain periods of the year.
