Koper (Italian: Capodistria, Croatian: Kopar) is the fifth largest city in Slovenia and the largest coastal city in the country. The city is the capital of the City Municipality of Koper. Both Slovene and Italian are official languages.
Prior to land reclamation and the construction of the international port at the end of the 1950s, the city of Koper/Capodistria was an island, separated from the mainland by a lagoon named Stagnon, Val Stagnon, or Valle di Stagnone. Also the hill named Sermin/Sermino, located east of the port, was a former island.
Saltworks have been active in the Val Stagnon lagoon for a long time. In the 19th century the salt industry in Koper/Capodistria underwent a phase of particular development. The saltworks in the lagoon were divided in 10 areas: Semedella (Semedela), Gome, San Leone, San Nazario, San Girolamo, Ariol, Sermino (Sermin), Fiume, Campi, and Oltra.
