Val del Mus (Val Sarzana), Voltago Agordino, Provincia di Belluno, Veneto, Italia
The Sarzana stream valley between Voltago Agordino and Giove hamlet (Agordo) is characterised by the presence of pre-Hercynian metamorphic rocks (mainly phyllites) and Permian sedimentary rocks.
The right side of Sarzana stream, in the Val del Mus locality (i.e., the sector between the bridge of Provincial Road SP26 and the place where the stream bends sharply eastward), is famous for the occurrence of aragonite, maybe the most known mineral of the Agordo area (see also the localities Castagneto and Col di Foglia). Aragonite appears as colourless to white acicular crystals to 1-2 cm long in geodic cavities, varying in size from a few millemetres to a few tens of centimetres, embedded in red beds of the Upper Permian Val Gardena Sandstone formation and occasionally also in phyllites. Tiny crystals of dolomite are often observed inside the geodic cavities.
Pyrite cubic crystals are found in phyllites.
