The valley is crossed by the NE-SW trending Naiftal/Val Nova thrust, which puts in contact the Ifinger/Ivigna granodiorite with various formations of the Athesian Volcanic Group, and also with the Val Gardena Sandstones and the Brixen/Bressanone Unit of the metamorphic basement.

Although the presence of pebbles and cobbles of bloodstone (heliotrope), flint, jasper and other quartz varieties along the streambed of Naifbach/Rio di Nova has long been known (Liebener & Vorhauser, 1852; von Zepharovich, 1859; Gasser, 1913; and other authors), the discovery of a bloodstone deposit in the steep Naif gorge (Naif-Schlucht), not far from Meran 2000, is quite recent (2007), due to the local collector Paul Berger.

Old mine workings (galena and sphalerite in baryte-fluorite gangue) are reported at Alfreiderwald in the Ifinger/Ivigna granodiorite.
