Yampi Sound Copper Mine; Yampi Sound Copper deposit

The Coppermine Creek Mine is located near the head of Coppermine Creek (also referred to as Water Point) on the coast of Yampi Sound.

Access to the deposit was by sea.

Chalcocite, malachite, cuprite, atacamite and brochantite occur in quartz veins up to 2 metres thick which are emplaced in sheared, sericitized and carbonated quartz porphyry of the Wotjulum Porphry. The mineralization is exposed over a 9 metre length and 0.6 metre width and dips to the east. The deposit was mined in 1912-1915 and yielded 94.35 tonnes of ore containing 23.17 tonnes of copper. The Wotjulum Porphry is extensive in the northwest Yampi peninsula.

The Simpson Mineral Collection of the Western Australian Museum contains specimens MDC 6190, SC S2144B, SC S3559, SC S3566A and SC S3566B from this location.

Details for this location are also taken from its entry (site code S0018587) in the Western Australian Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety's online database (MINEDEX) of mines, mineral deposits and prospects.

Maitland (1919) described the deposit as follows: "The lode occurs on the beach and. being not very far from deep water, facilities for mining are good. The ore is mostly chalcocite of good quality, and is associated with a little green carbonate of copper, and quartz. The lode, so far as has been developed, is from 5 to 6 feet wide, and underlies to the east, and so far as, may be judged from specimens forwarded to the Department, it occurs in a faulted zone of metamorphic crystalline rocks. The lode is a sericitised and carbonated quartz-porphyry."
