Other/historical names associated with this locality:
Venturi Township; Spanish River Carbonatite Complex; Township 107 alkaline intrusion

Geological Description:
Paleoproterozoic alkaline intrusion with an inner phase compose of sovite, pyroxenite and minor ijolite and an outer phase composed ijolite, silicocarbonatite and nepheline-cancrinite syenite. The host rock is fenitized Neoarchean quartz monzonite. Late stage, sodium-rich veins and dikes composed of sodalite/hackmanite, albite, aegirine, ilmenite and pyrite are mostly concentrated in the outer phase.

Exploration History:
The Spanish River Carbonatite has been sporadically explored for vermiculite, niobium and rare earth elements from 1955 to present. Currently, phosphate-rich residuum is mined and marketed as fertilizer by Boreal Agrominerals Incorporated.
The mined area is over 300 m2 and exposes sovite and pyroxenite. There are several trenches that expose the residuum and bed rock. Vermiculite, biotite, aegirine, albite, calcite, ilmenite and pyrite are common minerals in the residuum. Sodalite/hackmanite veins and stringers were identified in the southernmost trenches.
