Ionia Volcano
Volcano Hill is a high east-facing bluff, where the Carlile Shale is overlain by Peoria Loess. The site is named because locals mistook effects (steam) from the oxidation of iron-sulfide minerals for volcanic activity. It is one of the earliest-documented geologic heritage sites in the Western USA. It may have been observed by the explorers Merriwether Lewis and William Clark, in 1804. It is possible, however, that the steaming bluff they observed was further upriver. Since the 1800s, the Missouri River has moved eastward, and the weathering activity has subsided.
