The granular mafic rocks of Porto da Cruz, outcropping in the embedded valleys of the Voltas and Massapez (or Maçapez) streams, constitute a rare example of plutonic igneous rocks on the island of Madeira. These are essentially gabbroic rocks (gabbros, monzogabros and essexites) whose main characteristic is the existence of minerals such as feldspathoids, kaersutite and aegirine, suggesting a late phase of residual, alkaline emanation.
