The area between the villages of Myrtiski and (Ano) Vyrsini hosts several small chromite deposits that are spatially associated with the ophiolitic complex of Ano Vyrsini. This complex extends for approximately 23 km between the villages of Vyrsini and Organi. Its width varies from 0.5 to 6 km, while its thickness ranges between 200 and 300 m.

The ophiolitic sequence consists predominantly of ultrabasic rocks, including harzburgite, dunite, pyroxenite, and serpentinite, along with gabbros, gabbro-pegmatites, and plagiogranites. Chromite mineralization occurs both as massive bodies and as finely disseminated aggregates within serpentinites and dunites. Accessory minerals associated with the chromite deposits include uvarovite and kämmererite. Uvarovite appears in its characteristic emerald-green coloration, forming crystals up to a few millimeters in size, typically embedded in chromite.

East of Myrtiski, numerous small rodingite lenses have been observed in association with gabbros and gabbro-pegmatites. These rodingites are composed mainly of reddish-brown grossular, clinozoisite, hornblende, chlorite, and calcite, with crystals reaching sizes of up to 1 cm.

The first geological surveys and mining operations in the area were conducted by Germans in 1916, followed by Bulgarians during World War II. These early works consisted of small-scale surface excavations averaging about 10 m in length, as well as two underground tunnels measuring approximately 15 and 40 m, respectively. Both tunnels have since collapsed and are no longer visible. Several mineral occurrences were exploited at the time but were soon abandoned due to their limited size and low ore grades.
