Storbørja marmorforekomst, Velfjorden, Brønnøy, Nordland, Norge

A banded, medium grained, red marble locally known as "Sunset Marble" (Solnedgangsmarmor) with a thickness of 10-15m. In some parts the marble grades into white (Karlsen 1991). The red marble is part of a larger marble zone, stretching from the Storbørja fjord, through the valley into northern direction.
The occurrence was discovered in 1896 and published by Vogt (1897). Exactly when is not known, but some blocks were taken out, some of which can be found near the shore.
Karlsen (1991) considered the marble to be of relatively good quality and sees a certain potential for it as building stone.
Around 1990 the occurrence was studied as a source of industrial calcite, but not considered to be of interest.
