Early Jurassic lignite coals discovered at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries by German geologist Christian Leopold, Baron von Buch who described and identified "brown coals" occurring in the area of Zawiercie, Poręba, Blanowice, Niegowonice and Żelisławice, included in the "new coal formation" so named to distinguish them from Carboniferous coals in Upper Silesia. Mine operated in years 1796? and 1822-1887.
