Hespriholmen
A prehistoric greenstone quarry. The quarry was abandoned ca. 2000 b.C., indicated by the bottom level of the quarry, which is nowadays 6 meters over the sea level. Quarrying commenced probably 7500 b.C.
The rock was used for the production of stone tools, and axes in stone originating from here have been found in the south of Rogaland, and all the way in Sogn to the north. A few axes have also been found in the south-east of Norway (Anders, 1983).
The coordinates are for the largest quarry, but three smaller quarries have also produced greenstone. A total of 4-500 m3 of greenstone has been transported away from the island to the main island, but ca. 70% of this rock ended at the sea bottom.
This quarry is protected by law as a cultural heritage site.
