Small scale copper mining in numerous prospects in the "Copper Breaks" area (north central part of the county) took place prior to 1833 and again in in about 1873-1883. The "copper nuggets" (actually chalcocite, covellite, or a mixture of the two) occur scattered throughout gypsiferous Permian sedimentary rocks in the area.
