The Waverley occurrence is located near the headwaters of the North fork of Downie Creek, a.k.a. Sorcerer Creek, immediately north of the divide separating that stream from the North fork of Illecillewaet River, 3 kilometres due west of Sorcerer Mountain and about 52 kilometres north-northeast of Revelstoke, British Columbia. Waverley is immediately above and to the east of the Tangier workings (MINFILE 082N 015).
There is a description of the deposit and area on the British Columbia “Minfile” site, current to 2020. Brief excerpts are quoted below:
“The property is underlain by northwest-striking and steep (60 to 90 degrees) northeast-dipping Lower Cambrian strata comprised of light grey, coarsely crystalline limestone with argillaceous and siliceous varieties, fine-grained quartzites, argillaceous and carbonaceous to graphitic schists and phyllites, and minor grey talcose and sericitic schists. Complex minor folding, shear zones and fissures are common.”
“The ore occurs in well-defined fissures, replaces dark grey or black fine-grained limestone and is found as irregular bodies more or less elongated along predominant shear and fault zones that trend approximately 320 degrees. Veins of quartz and calcite, striking more northerly than the main oreshoots, are barren in most places.”
“The ore is highly oxidized and consists of limonite, anglesite, cerussite, malachite, azurite, smithsonite and occasional nodules of galena and tetrahedrite in a gangue of decomposed limestone, calcite and quartz.”
Note that in the Minfile quotes the terms “ore” and “oreshoot” are used in a geological rather than a legal sense.
Comments by Giles Peatfield on some of the minerals reported from the locality:
Tetrahedrite subgroup: Gunning (1929) noted that the tetrahedrite was “argentiferous”.
O’Grady (1928) gave a good summary of the occurrence, with some sampling data, that is of some historical interest. Note that there is no official record of production from the mine.
