Elba Copper Mine; Hoardwell Mine; Hoardwell Mines

"A copper mine was discovered in Lord Douglas's estate, at a small farm called Hoardweel. It was wrought about 12 years ago, by an English company, and had a very promising appearance, the ore being very rich; but, although the vein continued, it ceased to bear metal, and was abandoned. It is thought the trials made to recover it were not sufficient." (Douglas, 1792)

"About 12 years ago a copper mine was wrought on a small farm called Hoardweel, the ore is said to have been rich, but the working was given up, owing to the vein having failed." (The traveller's guide, 1798)

"Proprietor: Lord Home.
Maps: One-inch Ordnance and Geological, Sheet 34; six-inch, Berwick 10 N.E.
The old mine is situated on the north bank of the Whiteadder, about one-third of a mile north-east of Hoardwell and just opposite to Elba.
The mines are very old, and were worked about 1760 and again in 1825*, but without success. Three levels have been driven in a N.N.E. direction along the strike of the country-rock (greywacke), which is vertical. The levels are close together, and only at the middle one is there any signs of a vein. This consists of crushed greywacke, and shows no indication of gangue or ore minerals. The levels are of considerable size, but there are no dumps, and the material was evidently tipped directly into the river, and so eventually washed away. The ores were chalcopyrite and tetrahedrite." (Wilson & Flett, 1921, the asterisk (*) refers to Milne-Home, 1837)

"There was also prehistoric mining for copper at Hoardweel Mine near the town." (Border Telegraph, 2020)

"Mine. Three separate workings, the longest (with smallest entrance) 250 m. [...] Shafts and copper mine houses marked on 6" OS 1857 sheet 10 immediately N of Elba." (Scottish Cave and Mine Database Search)

Note on the mineral list: Shaw et al. (1995) also report "probable secondary Ti-oxide".
