The Loma Caribe peridotite represents a harzburgitic oceanic mantle, as part of a dismembered Cretaceous ophiolitic complex. The Loma Caribe deposit is classified as hydrous Mg silicate type, and, based on its geochemical footprint, textures and mineralogy, has been divided into several zones, which are, from bottom to top, the serpentinised peridotite, the saprolite horizon, the oxide horizon and a duricrust zone. The protolith is a serpentinised peridotite rich in olivine and enstatite, crosscut by serpentine minerals (i.e., lizardite). The saprolite horizon consists of Ni-rich lizardite with relicts of olivine and enstatite, and with minor clinochlore, maghemite and goethite. In the oxide horizon, ore samples contain goethite, hematite, gibbsite and chromian spinel.

The Dominican Loma Caribe peridotite is one of the ophiolite-related ultramafic rocks exposed along the northern margin of the Caribbean Plate. The peridotite extends along a NW–SE oriented belt, approximately 4–5 km wide and 95 km long, in the Cordillera Central. Small chromitite bodies (<10 m long) are hosted within peridotites in the northern and central part of the Loma Caribe peridotite belt. These chromitite bodies are discontinuous lenses or pods, rarely exceeding 1 m in thickness, that are generally hosted in dunite exhibiting variable degrees of serpentinization. Locally, chromitites from the central part of the peridotitic belt also occur as small veins (<2 cm thickness) which cross-cut both dunite and harzburgite.
