The deposit is hosted in Cretaceous strata and covered by Quaternary sediments. The Cretaceous sedimentary strata consist of basal continental sedimentary rocks, a middle stratum of rock salt, and a capping of marine sedimentary rocks. The rock salt layer thickens from the edges to the center of the basin, with thickness in the range of 170–600 m.
