The mine commenced in 1963 as Sri Ponkumar Magnesite Mine and later renamed Sri Ponguru Magnesite Mine.

The mine is near the village of Jagir Ammapalayam and covers an area of approximately 39 hectares.

The mine comprises two operations: Nagara Malai in the north and northeast portions of the deposit and Kusamalai in the southeast portion.
