Other/historical names associated with this locality:
Val Guichard; Val Ghicciard
Other Languages:
French:
Vallée des Charbonnières (Vallon des Charbonnières; Combe des Charbonnières), Vallée Pélis (Vallée du Pélis; Vallée de Lucerne; Vallée de Luzerne)
Italian:
Valle dei Carbonieri (Vallone dei Carbonieri; Comba dei Carbonieri; Vallone dei Carboneri), Val Pellice (Val Luserna)
Occitan:
Valon di Charboniers (Comba di Charboniers), Val Pèlis (Val de Lusèrna)
The valley, located in the municipal territories of Bobbio Pellice and Villar Pellice, is drained by the Ghicciard (also known as Guichard or Guicciard) stream, a right-hand tributary of the Pellice stream. The middle course of the Ghicciard is fed by Rio di Comba la Roussa on the left-hand side and Rio di Comba Ciabraressa on the right-hand side. The upper valley splits into two branches, Comba della Gianna and Comba del Pis.
The valley includes, from east to west, rocks belonging to three different units: the Paleozoic crystalline Dora-Maira Massif, the Mesozoic metasedimentary carbonate-rich succession known as the Giulian-Sea Bianca unit, and the tectonically superposed Monviso meta-ophiolite complex.
Note on toponymy: the toponym "Carboneri" written on some mineral labels is based on a spelling variant of the traditional "Carbonieri", which appeared in recent times on some maps and tourism websites. However, Carbonieri (Italian), Charbonnièrs (French), and Charboniers (Occitan) are the official toponyms used to indicate the valley and the eponymous seasonal settlement in documents and signposts at Bobbio Pellice and Villar Pellice. The valley, already indicated as Val Guichard (French), Vallis Guichardi or Vallis Guizardi (Latin), and Valle Guichardesca or Val Guichard (Italian) in various documents between the 13th and 17th centuries, got its current name by the charcoal burners that until the beginning of the 20th century manufactured charcoal in the wooded areas of the valley.
