Type:
"The Von Damm Vent Field (VDVF) is located on the flanks of the Mid-Cayman Spreading Centre, 13 km west of the axial rift, within a gabbro and peridotite basement."
The vent field is at a depth of some 2,280 metres and comprises three conical mounds.
The four vents include: Mustard Stand, Ravelin 2, Marker X-18, and Arrow Loop.
Von Damm vent field (VDVF) occurs on the Mount Dent oceanic core complex of the Mid-Cayman Rise, an ultraslow-spreading center in the Caribbean Sea. The massif on which VDVF sits was proposed to have formed ca. 2 Ma and to be composed primarily of gabbro. The initial characterization of hydrothermal precipitates at VDVF reported it as a “new class of hydrothermal system”; as of 2025, VDVF is still the only primary talc-dominant hydrothermal system known. However, the presence of talc in lower abundances in hydrothermal environments is widespread and occurs in geologically diverse hydrothermal systems, and talc may occur as either a primary or a replacement mineral in hydrothermal systems.
