Puits Espérance

The beginnings of anthracite mining go back to the 18th century. The industrial exploitation of coal started in 1833 after two concessions were granted in Communay and in the neighboring Ternay. In the following decades, the deposit was developed and exploited via several shafts. In 1927 the mine was closed for the first time. During the years of World War II operations resumed until the mine was finally closed in 1951.

The geo-coordinates mark the approximate location of the "Espérance" shaft
