UNESCO Global Network of GEOPARKS locality.

Poikilitic wehrlite.

At this outcrop a body of wehrlite is exposed with a unique rock texture regarding the size, shape and arrangement of the crystals of its minerals known as poikilitic texture and the rock as poikilitic wehrlite.

The poikilitic texture refers to igneous rocks where large crystals (phenocrystals of oligoclase)contain irregularly scattered and oriented smaller crystals of other minerals. At this locality, wehrlite consists of microcrystalline dark grey mass mainly composed of olivine and chromite and scattered large crystals of clinopyroxene (2-3 cm long), which includes minor crystals of whitish plagioclase.

At this locality, the poikilitic wehrlite appears in contact with another accumulated rock (gabbro), which probably crystallized in different magma chambers during the formation of the Troodos Ophiolite Complex.

It is cumulate rock, which was formed within one of many magma chambers that were created between the crust and the Earth's upper mantle during the formation of the Troodos Ophiolite Complex. When the magma remained within the magma chambers for an extended period of time, the gradual drop in temperature resulted in the gradual crystallization, segregation and accumulation in a relatively successive order of the crystals of olivine and chromite, clinopyroxene and plagioclase at the bottom of the magma chamber forming the cumulus rocks of Troodos.
