Groeve onder het Rotspark; Groeve westelijk van de Heksenkeuken
The Groeve onder het Rotspark ("Quarry below the Rock Park") or Groeve westelijk van de Heksenkeuken ("Quarry west of the Witches' Kitchen") is a marl quarry in the Dutch municipality of Valkenburg aan de Geul in South Limburg. The underground quarry is located on the west side of Valkenburg on the Plenkertstraat in Plenkert in the Polferbos on the northern edge of the Margraten Plateau in the transition to the Geuldal. At the site, the plateau plunges steeply for several meters.
To the southeast are the Valkenburg Open Air Theater with the Witches' Kitchen and, behind Villa Rozenheuvel, the quarry behind Villa Rozenheuvel. About 100-150 meters to the northwest are the flint mines of Valkenburg and the Roman Catacombs in the Heide quarry.
From the late Middle Ages to the 19th century, the quarry was mined by block breakers with impact chisels for the extraction of limestone blocks.
Around the summer of 1920, the tunnel system was lost, and the quarry was no longer visited by people for decades.
In 1989 the quarry was rediscovered due to erosion that exposed a natural pipe. Access was gained to the old tunnel system via this earth pipe. It turned out, among other things, that in part of the quarry sewage from a restaurant had flowed into the quarry, causing a layer of sludge to be deposited in the corridors.
The quarry has an area of ââapproximately 78 square meters. It is not a large quarry, but it is valuable because of its cultural history. The corridors used to have connections to the Gemeentegrot ("Municipal Cave") quarry, but a belt of collapses no longer makes this possible.
