The Langen Akker is a former sand quarry and landfill in the Dutch municipality of Valkenburg aan de Geul in South Limburg. The quarry is located northeast of Berg, southwest of Geulhem and west of Valkenburg in the Bergse Heide slope forest on the northern edge of the Margraten Plateau in the transition to the Geuldal. At the site, the plateau plunges steeply for several meters.
The landfill has its highest point at approximately 134 meters above sea level and has an area of approximately 11 hectares.
About 400 meters to the east is another former open-pit sand quarry, the Meertens Quarry. About 1300 meters to the west is an open-pit quarry where limestone was extracted, the Curfs quarry. North of Langen Akker there are numerous underground limestone quarries on the mountain slope to the Geuldal. One of these is the Brakkengroeve ("Barracks Quarry") , which also has corridors under the Langen Akker.
Northwest of the quarry, there is a former gravel track on the slope that used to transport gravel extracted from the plateau to the valley.
In 1954, sand excavation began at this location, reaching an excavation level of 110 meters above sea level. A total of 550,000 cubic meters of sand and gravel were excavated.
From 1969 to 1989, the quarry was used as a landfill for municipal, commercial and construction waste, dumping a total of approximately 847,000 tons of waste.
In 1998-2000 the landfill was covered with trisoplast (clay polymer) and sand.
Since April 28, 2005, the landfill has been open for recreation and Galloway cattle have been released for grazing.
