The underground quarry is located south of Valkenburg on the Neerhem road in Neerhem. The quarry is located under the cable car and the Wilhelmina Tower under the Heunsberg on the northern edge of the Margraten Plateau in the transition to the Geuldal. At the site, the plateau plunges steeply for several meters.

The Daelhemerweg Test Tunnel is also located south of the Fluweelengrot quarry.
From the 17th to the 20th century, the quarry was used by block crushers for the extraction of limestone.
In 1960, a large crater was formed that was closed at the top with a roof.
The Wilhelmina Quarry is a medium-sized quarry and originally consisted of numerous parts that were connected to each other via corridors.
The part of the quarry under the cable car originally had the entrance on the plateau in a sunken road and in 1967 had an area of 40 by 80 meters, but in 2019 it measures 9612 square meters with a corridor length of 1365 meters.
The part of the Wesselsberg quarry originally consisted of a corridor of approximately 40 meters long, but the entrance to this has been closed with material from the crater, but measures 78 square meters in 2019.
The part of the Wilhelmina quarry has an area of 5,509 square meters and a corridor length of 507 meters.
The different parts of the quarry are accessible via the crater under the cable car.
