Daelhemerwegtunnel
The Daelhemerweg Trial Tunnel or Daelhemerwegtunnel is a marl quarry in the Dutch municipality of Valkenburg aan de Geul in South Limburg. The underground quarry is located south of Valkenburg, between the Daalhemerweg in the southwest and the Neerhem road in Neerhem in the northeast. The quarry is located below the Heunsberg on the northern edge of the Margraten Plateau in the transition to the Geuldal. At the site, the plateau plunges steeply for several meters.
South of the tunnel is the Wilhelmina Quarry and to the north is the Fluweelengrot quarry.
In the first half of the 20th century, car traffic between Maastricht and Heerlen had to pass through the narrow streets of Valkenburg, making the town a bottleneck for traffic. A study was then made into how a ring road could best be constructed, whereby traffic coming from Berg at the top of the Cauberg would be diverted to the Daalhemerweg and then drive through a tunnel under the Heunsberg to Neerhem. From there, traffic could continue towards Klimmen and Heerlen.
In 1957, a test tunnel was constructed under the Heunsberg by Rijkswaterstaat. During construction, they encountered an unstable area with collapses. They tried to solve the instability with mining props, but to no avail. Construction of the tunnel was aborted and never resumed. The later construction of the A79 eventually eliminated the need for the tunnel.
Until the 1950s, it was possible to walk underground from the Fluweelengrot to the Gemeentegrot. After the tunnel construction, part of the tunnel collapsed and ended up in the underlying old tunnel system. To prevent further collapses, the collapse was filled with silver sand.
The tunnel was constructed primarily as a transportation route and not for the extraction of limestone. The tunnel consists of a single corridor with a length of approximately 250 meters. The tunnel starts at the Daalhemerweg, where the road makes a large bend, and runs underground towards Neerhem where it ends next to Hotel Atlanta at the place where the N595 makes a right-angle bend.
Both ends of the tunnel are closed with fencing so that bats, among other things, can use the tunnel as a roost.
