The underground quarry is located southwest of Oud-Valkenburg in the northwest of the Sint-Jansbosch on the northeastern edge of the Margraten Plateau in the transition to the Geuldal. At the site, the plateau plunges steeply for several meters.

The Sint-Jansbosch Quarry II and Sint-Jansbosch Quarry I are located approximately ten and twenty meters to the west, while the Sint-Jansbosch Quarry IV and Sint-Jansbosch Quarry V are also located approximately 30 meters to the southeast and 55 meters to the east, respectively.
About 100 meters to the northwest is the Groeve Pruus Karel I, about 300 meters to the south is the Groeve Essenbosch IV and about 325 meters to the southeast is the Groeve van de Scheve Spar II.

From the 17th to the 19th century, the quarries were mined by block crushers for the extraction of limestone.

The quarry is carved under the Horizont of Romontbos in the Schiepersberg Limestone from the Maastricht Formation.
