While extracting this pocket (situated on the River Catcher Vein) in September 2023, the night skies above northern England were lit by magnificent displays of the Aurora Borealis. In recognition of the perfect coincidental colours and timing, this pocket was named the Northern Lights.
Fluorite crystals occur as singles and twins with occasional crystallised galena and rarely as octahedral crystals. Colour zoning characteristically shifts from oily apple green edges to citrus lemon bodies, with inner nebulous cores containing hints of burnt sienna.
Occasional faces are dusted with wispy patches of micro-sucrosic quartz, and in daylight the cubes naturally fluoresce deep purple at their corners.
