Old baryte mine closed in 1986.

NOTE: Stibnite specimen supposedly from this locality have been put on the market years ago, but the locality is wrong.

Note: Coordinates are for level 0.

Annual baryte yield:

10,000 t/year from 1946 to 1956.

15,000 to 18,000 t/year from 1957 to 1963.

22,000 to 32,000 t/year from 1964 to 1981.

Less than 20,000 t during the last 2 years.

Total: approximately 750,000 tonnes.

"South of Draguignan on the N555 [currently the D555]. Take the N7 [currently the DN7] to the left. Immediately to the right, there is a road leading to the mine at the place called Les Porres with baryte, calcite, chalcopyrite, fluorite, quartz, and other minerals." [Belot, 1978]

Detailed Mineral List:

ⓘ 'Ankerite-Dolomite Series'
Description: SEM-EDS analyse was right, but PXRD showed it was a mixture of calcite-dolomite-magnesite and siderite
ⓘ Aragonite
Formula: CaCO3
ⓘ Baryte
Formula: BaSO4
Habit: Massive to prismatic
Colour: Colourless to white or blue
ⓘ Boulangerite
Formula: Pb5Sb4S11
Description: SEM-EDS analyse showed jamesonite, not boulangerite
ⓘ Calcite
Formula: CaCO3
ⓘ Cerussite
Formula: PbCO3
ⓘ Chalcopyrite
Formula: CuFeS2
ⓘ Dolomite
Formula: CaMg(CO3)2
ⓘ Fluorite
Formula: CaF2
Habit: isometrics, up to 5mm
Colour: Colourless to yellow, frequently brown
Description: Some fluorite shown on the "fluorite from Les Porres" page certainly comes from other localities (probably Font-Sante, but not only). Largers fluorite crystals from "Les Porres" do not exceed 5mm (G.Mari, Mines et minéraux de la Provence cristalline, 1979)
ⓘ Galena
Formula: PbS
ⓘ Jamesonite
Formula: Pb4FeSb6S14
Description: Determined by Y. Moello (doctorat thesis, 1983) as inclusions in baryte, causing it's lilas-brown coloration. SEM EDS analysed by Chollet Pascal at LMV, Clermont-Ferrand.
ⓘ Magnesite
Formula: MgCO3
Description: Comes as a part of an intimate mixture of Ca-Mg carbonates encrusting calcite crystals. No individuals crystals are known
ⓘ Marcasite
Formula: FeS2
ⓘ Miargyrite
Formula: AgSbS2
Description: Chollet Pascal Collection - SEM-EDS analysed by Vincent Bourgoin at Jean Wyart association
ⓘ Pyrite
Formula: FeS2
ⓘ Quartz
Formula: SiO2
ⓘ Semseyite
Formula: Pb9Sb8S21
Habit: Agregats
Colour: Grey, metallic
ⓘ Siderite
Formula: FeCO3
ⓘ Sphalerite
Formula: ZnS
