Former diabase quarry, now partly flooded.

The mountain lake lies between Winterberg-Silbach and Winterberg-Siedlinghausen — surrounded by steep rock faces, this geotope dates back to the time of opencast mining around 1930.

This impressive geotope was created by mining diabase, a volcanic rock that was brought to the earth's surface around 300 million years ago. The diabase protruded from the summit of the Meisterstein and was quarried in 1930 and used to build roads and railway lines in the Hochsauerland district.
What was left was this huge hollow that filled with groundwater and rainwater.

If you want to visit the mountain lake, you should not be afraid of heights and be careful, as not all areas on the steep walls are secured. From the center of Silbach you follow the Stollenweg to the summit of the Meisterstein and can look into the turquoise-blue lake from above.
