The stratigraphic sequence from oldest to youngest as Ordovician, Carboniferous, Permian, Neogene, and Quaternary. Ordovician strata are exposed in drill holes within the southern portion of the mining area and are primarily intruded by dioritic rocks. These strata range in thickness from 61 to 136 m and consist mainly of gray to dark gray limestone and dolomite. The Carboniferous strata have been impacted by intrusions, resulting in unstable bedding. These strata exceed 200 m in thickness and comprise the Benxi Formation (∼2 m), Taiyuan Formation (170 m), and Shanxi Formation (50 m). The formations exhibit conformable contacts and are primarily composed of gray to gray-black shale interbedded with gray-white sandstone. Thin layers of carbonaceous shale and coal are locally observed within the Taiyuan and Shanxi Formations. The Permian strata are dominated by a sequence of continental sedimentary deposits composed of gray to light greenish shale, sandstone, and occasional thin bauxite layers. Drill hole information reveals a thickness range of 130 to 200 m for these strata, which are in conformable contact with the underlying Shanxi Formation. The Neogene strata consist primarily of fluvial-lacustrine sediments, including sandstone, conglomerate, siltstone, and claystone, with a thickness of 450 to 540 m, which exhibit an unconformable contact with the underlying Permian strata. The Quaternary strata are characterized by brownish yellow to reddish-brown sandy clay interbedded with medium and fine-grained siltstone layers, with a thickness range of 350 to 400 m.
Six distinct magnetite ore bodies have been delineated at the Litun deposit. These ore bodies are hosted at elevations between −1156 and −1418 m, exhibiting thicknesses ranging from 15 to 97 m, with an average thickness of 59 m. The average ore grade is 55.60 %. A sharp contact is observed between the magnetite ore bodies and the overlying and underlying hornblende. The mineralization process at the Litun deposit can be divided into four stages: Skarn Stage, Oxidation Stage, Sulfide Stage, Carbonate Stage.
